The benefits of apprenticeships
- Apprenticeships are a low-cost way to bring new talent into your organisation; recruitment is free and the training is funded either by your levy, or you pay just 5% of the bill (the government funds the rest)
- What apprentices learn will be tailored to your business – the programmes you use and the challenges you face
- It will change your business for the better – 78% of employers report improved productivity after recruiting an apprentice

Apprenticeship Funding
For levy payers:
All employers with a wage bill of over £3 million per annum are required to pay 0.5% of their total wage bill into the Apprenticeship Levy. The Levy can be used to train new and existing staff through Apprenticeship Training. At the end of the financial year, the levy resets - so use it or lose it.
For non-levy payers:
Non-levy payers can take advantage of Government funding with 95% of course costs funded. You'll only need to contribute 5% to the cost of apprenticeship training.
The government will fully fund apprenticeship training for SMEs with apprentices aged 16-21, who started their training after 1 August 2024.
National Insurance Contributions (NICs) Relief
Did you know that employers are exempt from paying Class 1 National Insurance Contributions for apprentices under 25, provided they earn less than £967 per week and are on an approved UK government apprenticeship standard?
With the recent announcement of an increase in employer National Insurance contributions from 13.8% to 15%, effective from April 2025, apprenticeships could be the smart solution for affordable business growth and staff development.
Fully funded apprenticeships for SMEs
To make apprenticeships more accessible to SMEs, the government announced that it will fully fund apprenticeships in small businesses from 1 April by paying the full cost of training for anyone up to the age of 21 – reducing costs and burdens for businesses and delivering more opportunities for young people to kick start their careers.
Apprenticeship levy transfer increase
Under the new measures, levy paying employers will be able to transfer up to 50% of their funds to support other businesses, including smaller firms, to take on apprentices. This will help SMEs hire more apprentices by reducing costs and enabling more employers to get the skilled workers they need while unlocking more opportunities for young people in a huge range of sectors and professions. The transfer increase is expected to come into effect from April 6.
