Course Overview

Part Time
Certificate

Develop your knowledge and understanding of accounting with our AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting course. This AAT qualification is perfect for individuals in junior and entry level roles in the accounting industry, small business owners wanting to upskill, or employers looking for foundation level accounting training for staff.

This qualification delivers a solid foundation in finance administration and core accounting skills, including double-entry bookkeeping, basic costing and an understanding of purchase, sales and general ledgers. Students will also learn about accountancy related business and personal skills and be introduced to the four key themes embedded in the qualification: ethics, technology, communications and sustainability.

This qualification is delivered purely online using a study platform provided by The Skills Network. You will be assigned an assessor who will mark the work you submit and provide feedback, support and guidance where required/request.

The below units are covered:

Introduction to Bookkeeping

This unit introduces students to the double-entry bookkeeping system and the associated documents and processes. Students will have learnt all stages necessary to process transactions using both manual and digital systems.

Principles of Bookkeeping controls

This unit builds on the knowledge and skills acquired from studying Introduction to Bookkeeping and explores control accounts, journals, and reconciliations. It takes students through a number of processes used in bookkeeping that help verify and validate the entries made. Students will also understand the use of the journal to the stage of redrafting the trial balance, following initial adjustments.

Principles of costing

This unit gives students an introduction to the principles of basic costing and builds a solid foundation in the knowledge and skills required for more complex costing and management accounting. Students will learn the importance of the costing system as a source of information that allows management to plan, make decisions, and control costs.

The Business Environment Synoptic

The business environment is dynamic and is changing considerably as the digital age progresses to facilitate the global nature of business. It is essential that students are aware of the impact that this environment has on organisations, from sole traders to large companies operating in local, national and global markets, and that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to enable them to work effectively.

This course is assessed through computer-based exams and a synoptic assessment, which draws on and assesses knowledge and understanding from across the qualification. If you do not live in Gloucestershire we will liaise with you to find an examination centre closer to your home address.

Students are responsible for paying their AAT annual registration fee.

Please note that once your application has been accepted and enrolment confirmed you will be unable to swap study modes.

  • This qualification is aimed at those aged 19 (as at 31st August of the academic year) or above who enjoy working with figures and are literate and numerate.

Please note this distance learning course is aimed at those who are confident with self-study and require minimum guidance and support and whilst you can study at a time and pace that suits your commitments there is an expectation to meet submission deadlines to ensure timely achievement.

Applicants will require a GCSE grade C/4 or above in Maths and English.

If you have previous accountancy or finance experience you may wish to complete an online skill check at www.aatskillcheck.org/  to enable you to decide whether to start at Level 2 or Level 3.

All applicants will be required to complete a short assessment form to ensure the correct level of study.

  • On successful completion you may like to consider our online AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting.

The business course is very versatile so it can help with lots of job options after college. My dream career is something in finance, maybe a Chartered Accountant, so everything I’m learning now on my course about Business will help me to reach that goal. I would encourage everyone who’s thinking of applying to GC to just do it, it’s been the best decision for me and I’m looking forward to what comes next in my education and career.“

I’m not sure what sort of career I want after the course yet but the college offers lots of career advice and guidance to help me. I applied for Gloucestershire College because there is better transport links and access for me and my wheelchair. I also thought the new campus looked really cool. I chose to study Business as my sister did the course previously and said it was really good, helping her get a job now. The course is very flexible and not too many hours a week so I can do other things like work experience around it.
