“Students make good progress in lessons and are keen to demonstrate their new-found knowledge and skills.” (Ofsted, 2016)
This course is suitable for students who have never studied Spanish before or who studied the language years ago and want to go back to the basics. Over the course of the three terms students will:
By the end of the course students will have studied a selection of the following topics:
Students will become familiar with grammatical structures such as:
You do not need to bring anything more than pen and paper and the willingness to try out the language to the first lesson. The teacher will let you know which text book is going to be used, so that you can purchase / order it before the next class (cost £12.00 - £15.00). Students need to keep a portfolio of their work, so ideally bring an A4 folder, paper and plastic wallets.
Our language classes are open to those aged 19 (as at 31st August of the academic year) or over.
There are no entry requirements for the Beginners Course. All that is required is enthusiasm and a willingness to put in regular study outside the classroom. The course is divided into 3 terms over the academic year. Please note that each term is enrolled and payable separately.
If you have completed the first term of this course, either here previously or at another institution, then it may be possible to join the group in January. Please contact Student Services for further details.
Please note that all courses are subject to a minimum number of learners. We endeavour to run all classes on the first evening, but a minimum number of learners must have pre-enrolled. Please do enrol early to ensure that the class will run on the first evening. A decision to continue to run the class will be made based on the number of learners who attend in the first week.
We recommend that students start in September and continue through to June. It may be possible to join at the beginning of the second term but this must be with the permission of the tutor and with the reassurance that the student has sufficient prior knowledge. It is not possible to join in the third term.
If students complete the Beginners Course successfully, provided there is sufficient interest, they can move on to the next level.

Many businesses work with companies abroad, or have branches in other countries. This gives speakers of multiple languages an advantage when it comes to working with larger companies and organizations.
We have courses in French, German, Spanish, and other languages for use in business and socializing. You might end up working for a global investment firm, or as a translator for the police!
Please note, all Language courses (excluding British Sign Language) are roll on courses, which involves students enrolling from one term to the next, building on the knowledge and skills learnt in the previous term. In exceptional circumstances and at the tutor’s discretion, it may be possible to join in-year, if there is already a foundation of language learning at the relevant level.
