Course Overview

Part Time
Certificate

Have you studied Spanish for two years or more either at Gloucestershire College or at another institution? Have you spent some time living and travelling overseas? Are you interested in furthering your knowledge of Spanish language and culture? Do you enjoy holidaying in Spain and want to become more confident in the language? Do you have family or friends who live there and speak the language? It probably frustrates you that you cannot say as much as you would like to!

Over the course of the year students will:

  • Study the vocabulary of everyday topics in greater depth, enabling them to communicate with confidence on a simple level with local people
  • Be able to give and ask for opinions
  • Continue to study authentic and real reading texts
  • Become more familiar with the basic rules of grammar, enabling them to create sentences independently in present past and future tenses and to produce pieces of writing such as postcards, informal emails and short formal and informal letters
  • Through the study of the language, become more familiar with many aspects of life, traditions and customs

By the end of the course students will have studied a selection of the following topics to a greater depth:

  • Family and personal details
  • Where I live / my home
  • Work and daily routine
  • Free time and hobbies / likes and dislikes
  • Out and about (in the cafe/restaurant, directions, shopping, booking a room in a hotel)
  • The Weather
  • Holidays and going places / means of transport
  • Making Plans
  • Health
  • Problems abroad

Students will continue to familiarise themselves with grammatical structures such as :

  • Gender (masculine, feminine)
  • The present tense of regular and irregular verbs.
  • Question and negative forms
  • Agreement of Adjectives
  • Adverbs of Frequency
  • Past Tenses
  • Future Time
  • Modal Verbs and the Conditional

You do not need to bring anything more than pen, paper and folder to the first lesson. The teacher will let you know which text book is going to be used, so that you can purchase / order it before the next class (Cost: £12.00 - £15.00). Students need to keep a portfolio of their work, so ideally an A4 folder, paper and plastic wallets.

  • Our recreational classes are open to those aged 19 (as at 31st August of the academic year) or above.

Please note this course is aimed at those you have completed at least two years of Spanish (Beginners and Pre Intermediate levels).

Students should have studied the language for at least two years and be familiar with the language of everyday topics and grammar. They should be able to construct sentences using the present tense.

The course is divided into 3 terms over the academic year. Please note that each term is enrolled and payable separately. Students can join at the start of any term, but if they are starting in January or April they must be aware that they are joining a continuing class.

Please note that all courses are subject to a minimum number of learners. We endeavour to run all classes on the first evening, but a minimum number of learners must have pre-enrolled. Please do enrol early to ensure that the class will run on the first evening. A decision to continue to run the class will be made based on the number of learners who attend in the first week.

We recommend that students start in September and continue through to June.  It may be possible to join at the beginning of the second term but this must be with the permission of the tutor and with the reassurance that the student has sufficient prior knowledge. It is not possible to join in the third term.

  • If, by the end of the course, there is a viable number of committed learners who have completed the above and who want to continue, consideration will be given to the creation of a continuation class.

What You Will Pay

Please select a course to see pricing information.

Many businesses work with companies abroad, or have branches in other countries. This gives speakers of multiple languages an advantage when it comes to working with larger companies and organizations.

We have courses in French, German, Spanish, and other languages for use in business and socializing. You might end up working for a global investment firm, or as a translator for the police!

Please note, all Language courses (excluding British Sign Language) are roll on courses, which involves students enrolling from one term to the next, building on the knowledge and skills learnt in the previous term. In exceptional circumstances and at the tutor’s discretion, it may be possible to join in-year, if there is already a foundation of language learning at the relevant level.
