Course Overview

Part Time
Certificate

Participation in our evening classes provides far more than the opportunity to learn new skills but also numerous benefits to our mental health and wellbeing. Evening classes are known to lower stress levels, improve confidence, increase social integration, contribute to personal growth and lifelong learning to name just a few advantages.

Whether you are a beginner, improver or seasoned artist, this course is designed to support and encourage all abilities in drawing and painting to get those creative juices flowing. Delivered by an experienced tutor and practising artist, the focus is not only on learning new techniques and drawing/painting styles, but you will also have time to pursue your own goals with structured guidance from the tutor.

In the first few weeks of term, you will take part in warm up techniques for drawing, develop your observational drawing skills, as well as exploring and refining drawing techniques. A variety of mediums will be used such as pencil, charcoal, graphite, pen and ink.

A natural progression will then be made into painting, discovering, or re-discovering for some, the qualities and attributes of different paints, techniques and styles with time for those that wish, to develop their own drawing/painting projects.

Essential materials needed:

  • A4 minimum drawing sketch paper or pad, plus thicker watercolour or acrylic paper if developing into paint.
  • A range of graded pencils, eraser, sharpener and liners.
  • Charcoal and coloured wet or dry mediums depending on preference ie: coloured pencils, pastels, watercolour, acrylic.

Your tutor will regularly review your activities and offer you support. You will be encouraged to identify small, realistic and achievable goals to work towards throughout the course with focus on starting to develop your own artistic style. All within a warm, friendly, learning environment.

  • Our recreational courses are for those aged 19 (as at 31st August of the academic year) and over.

  • Your tutor will be able to advise on any further training opportunities.

Student Stories

Sam Sek

I did one year of sixth form, but I wanted to focus on Art and felt like I'd rather use that skill to my best and focus on things I find more interesting. I prefer how visual it is. There’s a lot of thinking but it’s freer and you can do what you want really. We learn new skills and I like that we have multiple briefs – you don’t get burnt out and bored on one brief. I like how different the briefs are. You can pick one theme and really focus on that. I can put all my personal interests into the brief, so I got to design a poster for a tattoo shop in the style that I’m quite interested in.
