Course Overview

Part Time
Certificate

Participation in our evening classes provides far more than the opportunity to learn new skills but also numerous benefits to our mental health and wellbeing . Evening classes are known to lower stress levels, improve confidence, increase social integration, contribute to personal growth and lifelong learning to name just a few advantages.

Have you studied French for a year or more either at Gloucestershire College or at another institution? Have you spent some time living and travelling in French-speaking countries? Are you interested in furthering your knowledge of the French language and way of life? Do you enjoy holidaying in France and want to become more confident in the language? Do you have family or friends who live there and speak the language? It probably frustrates you that you cannot say as much as you would like to!

Over the course of the 2 terms, students will:

  • Study the vocabulary of everyday topics in greater depth than in Year 1 (Beginners or Intensive), enabling them to communicate with confidence on a simple level with local people
  • Learn how to give and ask for opinions
  • Become more familiar with the basic rules of grammar, enabling them to create sentences independently in present, past and future tenses and to produce pieces of writing such as postcards, informal emails and short formal and informal letters
  • Through the study of the language, become more familiar with many aspects of life, traditions and customs

By the end of the course students will have studied a selection of the following topics to a greater depth than in Year One:

  • Family and personal details
  • Where I live / my home
  • Work and daily routine
  • Free time and hobbies / likes and dislikes
  • Out and about (in the cafe/restaurant, directions, shopping, booking a room in a hotel)
  • The weather
  • Holidays and going places / means of transport
  • Making plans
  • Health
  • Problems abroad

Students will continue to familiarise themselves with grammatical structures such as :

  • The present tense of regular and irregular verbs
  • Question and negative forms
  • Agreement of adjectives
  • Adverbs of frequency
  • Perfect tense
  • Future Time

You do not need to bring anything more than pen, paper and folder to the first lesson. The teacher will let you know which text book is going to be used, so that you can purchase / order it before the next class (cost £12.00 - £15.00).

Students also need to keep a portfolio of their work, so ideally bring an A4 folder, paper and plastic wallets.

  • Students should have studied French for at least a year - Beginners or Intensive (60 hours of classroom tuition), be familiar with the language of everyday topics and basic grammar. They should be able to construct simple sentences using the present tense. If you are joining this course in January or April, please be aware that it is a continuing class. Please note that all courses are subject to a minimum number of learners. We endeavour to run all classes on the first evening, but a minimum number of learners must have pre-enrolled. Please do enrol early to ensure that the class will run on the first evening. A decision to continue to run the class will be made based on the number of learners who attend in the first week.

We recommend that students start in January and continue through to June.  It may be possible to join at the beginning of the second term but this must be with the permission of the tutor and with the reassurance that the student has sufficient prior knowledge. It is not possible to join in the third term.

  • If, by the end of the course, there is a viable number of committed learners who have completed the above and who want to continue, consideration will be given to the creation of a continuation class.

What You Will Pay

Please select a course to see pricing information.

Many businesses work with companies abroad, or have branches in other countries. This gives speakers of multiple languages an advantage when it comes to working with larger companies and organizations.

We have courses in French, German, Spanish, and other languages for use in business and socializing. You might end up working for a global investment firm, or as a translator for the police!

Please note, all Language courses (excluding British Sign Language) are roll on courses, which involves students enrolling from one term to the next, building on the knowledge and skills learnt in the previous term. In exceptional circumstances and at the tutor’s discretion, it may be possible to join in-year, if there is already a foundation of language learning at the relevant level.
