Take your passion for cars to the next level and learn how they really work! This course will give you a deeper understanding of vehicle mechanics and you’ll gain practical skills in repairing cars. You’ll cover essential areas like mechanical components, vehicle technology, engines, and electrical systems, all while working in our purpose-built workshops. It’s a great stepping stone to a career in the motor industry or an apprenticeship.
What You’ll Learn
This course gives you a thorough introduction to the world of motor vehicle engineering. You’ll explore topics like engines, transmission units, and electrical principles, gaining a broad understanding of how cars operate.
You’ll also gain hands-on skills in purpose-built workshops, where you’ll use industry-standard tools and equipment to fix and maintain vehicles.

You’ll have lots of options; motor vehicle technicians repair and service cars, vans, motorbikes, lorries and coaches, working on everything from engines and exhaust systems to air-conditioning and security!

Assessment
This course is assessed in several ways. You will take part in practical assessments, which you will write up and keep record of in an electronic portfolio. You will complete 3 written assignments about health and safety, tooling and workshop roles, and you’ll complete 9 multiple choice exams.
Anything else?
You will need to provide your own steel toe capped boots and coveralls. You are expected to attend 4 motor vehicle sessions per week, 2 practical and 2 theory. You will also attend 1 student development session and English and Maths if required. These sessions are spread across the week. We expect you to find a work in a relevant area to complete CPD. You are allocated 1 day of the week for this.
At Gloucestershire College we want students to develop their English and Maths skills so that they achieve their learning goals and future career aims. For this reason, all full-time students (16-18) who have not achieved grade 4 or above English language or maths GCSE will study these subjects as part of their course.
Gloucestershire College welcome any other/combinations of relevant qualifications that are comparable and/or equivalent to the typical course entry requirements.
For 19+ applicants that do not have recognised qualifications may still meet course entry requirements through alternative methods of assessment at the College’s discretion.

Upon completion, you may move on to the Level 3 course in motor vehicle or an advanced motor vehicle apprenticeship.
