Emily Stigant, ICT Manager at Dene Magna School and Charlotte’s line manager, also shared with us her top-tips for how to mentor an apprentice and explains why apprenticeships are so beneficial to businesses. You can read all about Emily’s experience of coaching an apprentice here.

Tell us about your apprenticeship experience so far?
I choose to do an apprenticeship because I liked the idea of gaining experience and qualifications at the same time. I also enjoy being hands on in a work place environment. I applied for my apprenticeship via the government website.
The marketing apprenticeship programme has helped me a lot in my job role. Without the apprenticeship, I would not have the knowledge to try different things. The apprenticeship programme aids me to reach my maximum potential without even realising it.
How do you balance your studies and work commitments?
I like to put what I am doing in my calendar which helps me to keep organised. This helps me when it comes to fitting studying for my apprenticeship around work as I schedule when I am going to complete the assignments, helping me keep on track.
How have you managed to progress in your apprenticeship throughout 2020/21, even during lockdown?
I have not actually been able to meet my new assessor Dawn at Gloucestershire College in real life yet due to the pandemic but Dawn supports me whenever I need it. She replies to my queries quickly and tells me just what I need. Dawn keeps in touch and ensures we have regular catch-ups to support me through my apprenticeship.
My line manager, Emily, has also supported me through my apprenticeship. We have our weekly team meetings which allow me to express any problems I have with something I am doing. I also know that Emily will always answer my questions if I ever have any and will do her best to help me. I also have one to one meetings with Emily which is where we discuss my apprenticeship progress and how I am doing.
Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship?
I would recommend doing an apprenticeship as it allows you to gain experience and also can give you many opportunities which you do not get doing anything else. I would like to go on to do a degree apprenticeship in marketing.
