#NAW21 8 Tips to Ace Your Apprenticeship Interview

Interviewing for an apprenticeship is very similar to how you’d interview for any other job. Only the best candidates get an interview and it’s very competitive. Preparation and research are key; employers are looking for those who have a good understanding of their career choice, as well as their business.

Here are our top tips to ace your apprenticeship interview:

1. Do your research: take a look at their website and social media profiles. What do they offer their customers, what are they proud of and why do you want to work for them? Think about what you might do differently, or what qualities you have that would set you apart from other applicants.

2. Review the job description, key skills and qualities: do you have any relevant experience, transferrable skills or an interest in what they’re asking for? Be prepared to add to what you’ve already said about yourself and what you can do in your application.

3. Practice interview questions: after looking at the job description, you should have an idea of what questions you might be asked. Ask a friend or family member to help you rehearse your answers so you’re confident in your answers. Think of real examples that demonstrate your skills or qualities, which could be from school/college or outside interests such as sports or hobbies. Think about what questions you could ask, such as what is the culture like, or what development opportunities do they offer?

4. Review your online/social media profile: make your settings private and check that you’re happy with what a potential employer may see, such as photos, comments and shared content.

5. Plan your journey: how are you going to get there and how long will it take? Ensure you arrive with enough time to spare so you feel more relaxed on the day.

6. Dress appropriately for the job: show your potential employer that you’re ready to work for them. It’s said that within 30 seconds of meeting you, interviewers have already started to form an opinion about your suitability for the role, so first impressions count!

7. Follow up on an interview: even if you have been unsuccessful. Don’t worry, it happens, but what’s more important is that you can learn from your experience for your next interview.

8. Be yourself! It’s okay to think about your answers and be honest. After all, the employer wants to get to know the real you and how you would fit in role and their company.
