Meet Sarah Atthey, Electrical Installation Lecturer at GC

We're gearing up for the September 2022 starts of our construction and building services apprenticeship programmes at GC. This month, we're catching up with our construction and building services trainers, to see what inspired them to learn a trade and why they enjoy teaching apprentices.

Sarah Atthey joined the College in July last year as an Associate Lecturer in Electrical, having previously worked in industry for 16 years.

“I started my career as an electrician when I was 24. My daughter had just turned three and I wanted to learn a trade and develop my career. I started as an apprentice myself, before setting up my own business, which I ran for 10 years.

“In 2021 I decided I wanted a new challenge and to come away from the day-to-day job. I took the role at GC, where I am part of a team of lecturers, trainers and assessors. There is a good mix here of experienced teachers and people who have come from industry.

“I'm really enjoying interacting with our apprentices and seeing them make progress. Developing methods to convey my knowledge and skills to our learners is one of my favourite parts of the job. It has made me reassess my knowledge base, and take time to remember how I learnt things at the start.

“I am keen to see more girls choosing STEM subjects. It is still a very male dominated industry, but I know first-hand the opportunities it can bring.”
