David Thomas is a world-famous stylist, considered one of the original pioneers of celebrity styling. He recently visited Fashion and Textiles students at Cheltenham campus to share his story, as well as tips and insights into the wonderful world of fashion and celebrity styling.
Here at GC, we pride ourselves in delivering learning from industry experts, but it was a real honour to recently welcome one of Hollywood’s most in-demand celebrity stylists.
David Thomas is a world-famous and well-respected stylist with over three decades of experience in the fashion world. In fact, he is considered one of the original pioneers of celebrity styling. He recently visited our Fashion and Textiles students at Cheltenham campus to share his story, as well as tips and insights into the wonderful world of fashion and celebrity styling.
Originally from Gloucester, David dropped out of school and took up a plumbing apprenticeship. He spent most of his spare time reading glossy magazines and eventually left for London to try and fulfil his dreams. After a huge amount of free work and effort trying to make contacts, David became an assistant to Judy Blame, stylist and jewellery designer. He was also doing his own styling work.
In 1991 he became the youngest fashion editor in the world for British Esquire Magazine, at the age of 25. He later worked as a contributing fashion editor at magazines such as Vogue Homme, Vanity Fair and British GQ.
Over the years, David has worked with a huge number of celebrities, including John Legend, Lionel Richie, Britney Spears, Calvin Harris, Gerard Butler, Mark Hamill, David Beckham, Angelina Jolie, The Spice Girls and many, many more!
He told many entertaining stories of his work, talking about how important it is to feel creatively fulfilled and happy in his work, and reflecting on a journey that he’s proud of. He even brought along a few examples of what his celebrity clients had worn, before judging the designs of GC students following a brief that he had set them!
When asked for his best tips for any young people looking to work in the fashion industry, David gave some very humble advice:
“Don't compare yourself to others - fashion has no right or wrong. You should always try and be better every day. Not the best, just keep being busy and working at being better. If people trust in you then that’s great, because the most important thing about clothes is how they make you feel.”
