Apprenticeship Spotlight: Software Developer Level 3

If your business is looking for an entry-level team member to assist with the creation of computer programmes, an apprenticeship is an excellent way to bring in a talented individual and train them up.

The IT industry continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, putting a strain on the existing talent pool and making it difficult for companies to find qualified staff. While there is a high demand for university courses in computing and software, degrees alone are not necessarily enough. Foundational concepts taught at the university level rarely meet most companies’ requirements for junior developers. Developers need access to the industry while they are gaining technical expertise through academic study.

There is an ongoing discussion about companies needing to create more opportunities with apprenticeships and other training schemes to provide necessary on-the-job training to aspiring developers.

Why Choose a Software Development Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship?

  1. Cost-Effective Talent Acquisition: Apprenticeships are often more cost-effective compared to hiring experienced developers. Employers can shape the skills of the apprentice to meet their specific needs.
  2. Fresh Perspectives and Innovation: Apprentices bring new ideas and innovative thinking. Their fresh perspectives can lead to creative solutions and improvements in your development processes.
  3. Commitment and Retention: Investing in an apprentice can lead to higher employee loyalty and retention rates. Apprentices who grow with your company are more likely to stay long-term.
  4. Bridging the Skills Gap: Apprenticeships provide practical, on-the-job training that complements theoretical knowledge. This approach ensures that apprentices develop the competencies required by the industry.

About Software Development Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship

A 100% government funding under the Tech Talent Lab initiative

The Software Development Technician Level 3 apprenticeship is fully funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology under the Tech Talent Lab: Decoding Your Future initiative launched by CyNam, Gloucestershire College, and South West Apprenticeship Company. Tech Talent Lab simplifies the apprenticeship process for employers, making it easier for companies to offer apprenticeships. It provides comprehensive support to businesses looking to recruit apprentices, especially in entry-level roles like Software Development Technician.

A Software Development Technician typically works as part of a software development team, building simple software components such as web, mobile, or desktop applications. Through learning on the job as well as at the college, apprentices will obtain an appreciation of the concepts, approaches, and techniques of software programming, and the ability to apply these to simple components used by teams within their organisation and their customer base. This advanced apprenticeship is a great way to bring in the skills, knowledge, and behaviours aligned with your business needs and organisational culture.

Duration and Delivery Model

Your Software Development Technician will be learning on the job, supported by block delivery at the college, where they will be training in our state-of-the-art Advanced Digital Academy, practicing the latest industry skills that they will be able to apply in your business.

The duration of this apprenticeship is up to 18 months.
