Skills Week 2025: See what we got up to!
Latest News
Last week our three campuses were abuzz with excitement as students from catering and hospitality, hairdressing, beauty and make up artistry took part in our annual Skills Week!
Skills Week is a dedicated week where our students take part in a range of engaging workshops, competitive challenges, and skill-building masterclasses, instead of their usual classes.
It’s a great opportunity for students to get creative, work as teams and learn new practical skills that can give them an edge in their chosen industries. Lots of our activities were supported by local businesses and past students, who showcased skills and stepped in as judges for our in-house competitions.
Catering and Hospitality
One of the highlights of the week was the Catering and Hospitality team’s Cook and Serve competition. It was judged by experts in the local hospitality scene: Lawrence Jeffries, Head Chef at The Jockey Club; Tom Gallimore, General Manager at Malmaison Hotel du Vin, and Simon Plociennik, Head Chef at Hotel du Vin.
Students worked in teams to a brief, where they got to create a 2-course menu, set the tables and serve their dishes to guests at Cheltenham’s No. 1 Restaurant. They were marked on 19 categories, including knife skills, time management, and presentation.
Our adult part-time learners explored St Oswald's Food Market in Bristol, indulging in flavours from around the globe – from Japan and the USA to Iraq and England. The day also included a brief tour of the scenic waterfront. The trip left everyone inspired and excited by the culinary diversity!
Professional Cookery students had an inspiring talk and masterclass with Sam Walker from The BASC. They explored a variety of English game animals and took on the exciting challenge of creating a canapé. Highlights included Partridge Bao Buns, Pheasant Dumplings, and Venison & Pear Tarts.
The winning designs could be served at the prestigious BASC Gala Dinner this March!
Our Level 2 students took part in a Farm to Fork session with AGM Venison, who brought in two Roe Deer. They learnt a lot about venison, its environment, and why we must manage it. The students learned how to skin and butcher the venison and then spent the afternoon cooking various cuts in different ways. They tried roasting, pan frying, chargrilling, and sous vide, which is a cross between poaching and finishing off in foaming butter.
After seeing the high-quality meats and hearing the inspiring chats from the team, all of the students enjoyed trying the venison – despite a few who thought they wouldn’t at the start of the session!
Hairdressing
Level 2 students at our Forest of Dean campus enjoyed an industry talk and demo session on braiding with hair expert Cheryl Evans. Afterwards they got to try out some techniques and learn a few hints and tips.
We were thrilled to welcome Shane Davis from Dog House Barbers for an inspiring demonstration for our barbering students. Shane showcased his expertise with a high-and-tight skin fade, a go-to technique in the barbering industry while sharing valuable insights into the craft. As a proud ex-student of GC, Shane now runs his own successful business and regularly returns to share his skills and inspire the next generation of barbers.
Aston & Fincher, hair and beauty suppliers, came to talk about their side of the industry and brought along a whole suite of products for hairdressing students to look at!
Past student, Amelie O’Connell, came to inspire some of our hairdressing students with a talk on the industry. She was winner of Colourist of the Year 2024 and the Future Talent Award at the Hair Awards 2024, so she had a thing or two to teach them!
Mia Louise Luby from Secret Install and House of Halo & Co. came in to visit our barbering students and give a presentation on hair systems for men. These are non-surgical hair replacement systems that are now used within the industry. It was a great in-depth presentation, from consultations with clients to fitting, cutting, removing and replacement procedure. She talked about her experience and training and the taboo that is around the subject. It was fantastic for our barbers to see and really opened their eyes to other opportunities.
Beauty Therapy
Beauty Therapy students were treated to a demonstration in lip tattooing! Danielle Stewart from Blushed by Danielle visited to give a semi-permanent makeup demonstration and talk about her business journey. Lip blushing is a very popular beauty treatment within the industry, so the students were very lucky to get an insight into how its performed, and the routes to take to add this to their future skill set.
Claire Rickards from Cotswold Beauty Station came along to give a talk and a demonstration of threading. Claire, who was a GC beauty student, talked about her experiences in the industry and how she set up a very successful business in Bredon. The students found this extremely interesting and had a fun time trying to master the ancient art of threading.
With so many new and exciting facials out in the beauty industry, Carly from CK Skin Clinic in Cheltenham came along to showcase a micro needling facial for our students.
Carly was very informative for the students wanting to start out in the industry and open their own businesses, sharing advice on the top skincare treatments, where to train, costing and starting a business.
Kayleigh from Sapphire Spa Solutions came in to chat with Level 2 students about progression and where they may want to go. She described to the students how she started in the industry and then set up an extremely successful agency business which works across Gloucestershire in large salons and health spas, providing staff at short notice.
Hannah White, training director from Monuskin Skincare, Cheltenham, came in to talk to the students about how she started in the industry. Another previous student, Hannah went on to work as a trainer for various companies but has been with Monu for 18 years.
She gave a demo on the new resurface and pale facial, which is up to date with industry standards.
Some of our Level 3 Beauty students had a go at thermal auricular therapy, better known as ear candling, to help a balance inner ears and chakras. In many countries this is a way of breaking down excessive earwax and helping to re-balance, due to excessive pressure of activities like flying or swimming. This was followed with some well-being time, with students taking part in a meditation to balance chakras.
Make Up Artistry
Make up artistry students had a great week with lots of demonstrations, challenges and guest speakers. Make up artists on Level 2 and Level 3 courses even took part in an exciting competition!
Level 2 students were required to create a back body art piece inspired by Chelsea flower show for the back of a magazine. 4 finalists were chosen by the team to go onto the final, which was judged by GC staff from across the college. Congratulations to winner, Torrin Hollands!
Level 3 students were required to create an Avant Garde hair and makeup look inspired by Chelsea flower show for a front-page magazine. All of the students were assessed for their creative hairdressing skills, and the winner was picked by GC staff from across the college. Well done to the winner, Poppy Simonds!
Some of the students had a great talk with New Swindon College, where they saw a demonstration on applying a wig and some character makeup with prosthetics. As well as a talk about HND courses and hearing some industry insights, the students also got to look at some student work and see props that their students have made for projects.
Level 2 make up students took part in a face swap challenge. The students were asked to choose two photos to copy using themselves as models. With 2 hours to recreate their chosen looks, the students worked on their make up skills, time management and confidence. A special well done to Hannah Small for her outstanding work!
The Growth Hub came to educate beauty students on where to start with opening their own business, for example how to produce a business plan and the importance of it, where to base your market and what audience to market to. They also went into branding and how important this is to get this right. It was a fantastic talk, and we look forward to welcoming The Growth Hub back in the future!
