A Cut Above the Rest: GC Barbering Students Attend Masterclass by Oscar Mendoza
There was an exciting buzz in our barbering department when renowned hairstylist and barber, Oscar Mendoza, arrived to host a masterclass for our very own barbering students. Oscar has been in the hairstyling industry for 10 years and fuelled his passion by pursuing his dream of opening the Mendoza Academy. The academy collaborates with colleges and other institutions to deliver top-grade classes.
Hosted in the grand Henry Dene Hall situated just behind our Gloucester campus, Johnny and Zoe, who were also in attendance completed a variety of different styles on models and walked our students through every step of the process. Oscar then took to the stage and created a fresh look on a model, all while conducting an insightful Q&A.
Oscar said: “Engaging with up-and-coming talent at institutions like Gloucestershire College is incredibly important because they represent the future of the barbering industry. By sharing knowledge, skills, and real-world experience, we help bridge the gap between education and the professional world, giving students the confidence and inspiration to refine their craft. Events like the masterclass give students the opportunity to learn beyond the classroom, ask questions, and see first-hand the level of dedication and technique required to succeed.”
With the rise of self-care, social media influence, and the barber chair becoming more about the social experience and a place to talk, barbering is more popular than ever. Additionally, research suggests that conversations during haircuts can help reduce stress and anxiety, with barbers being trained in mental health awareness to recognise signs of distress in clients. Not only this, but the profession also holds cultural and economic significance in Gloucestershire, just as it does in many other places.
Mikey Owens, a Level 2 Barbering student, said, "It was a great experience and I enjoyed it thoroughly. By attending the masterclass, I managed to secure a work placement alongside my barbering course."
Ann-Louise, Lecturer in Hairdressing, also said, "Having Oscar in inspires and motivates the students. It opens their eyes to what can be achieved within the barbering industry. It's also a great opportunity for us to work with industry experts and strengthen our wider industry relationships."
